Au pair

Principal conditions
Before hiring an au pair of non-European nationality, you need to obtain an authorisation.
The employer or their authorised representative needs to be a natural person lawfully residing in Belgium. At least one of the members of the host family needs to be a child younger than 13 at the start of the au pair's period of residence.
Application
To obtain the authorisation, submit the following documents:
- The application form for an authorisation to work for an au pair of non-EU nationality in French (.pdf) or in Dutch (.pdf) completed, signed and dated by the employer or their authorised representative;
- A photocopy of the identity card of the hosts;
- An original copy of the au pair employment contract in French (.pdf) or in Dutch (.pdf), duly completed, dated and signed by both parties;
- A photocopy of the certificate giving the au pair access to higher education in their country of origin (photocopy of the diploma) or the proof that they have attended school at least until they were 17 (copy of the certificate). In both cases, a translation must be attached;
- A family composition of the host family, delivered by the municipal administration;
- Proof that an insurance policy has been taken out for the possible early repatriation of the au pair due to illness or accident, as well as a commitment to pay the costs that the state may incur for the stay of the au pair or for their repatriation;
- Proof of a health insurance policy covering the risks in Belgium for the au pair;
- Proof of the additional insurance contract covering the risks with regard to medical, pharmaceutical and hospitalisation costs in case of an accident or illness;
- A school enrolment document proving that the au pair takes or will be taking lessons at a school teaching one of the languages of the Region, for which the au pair is coming here to improve their fluency ;
- A photocopy of all the pages of the passport of the person in question or of his residence permit in Belgium;
- The certificates of good conduct for all members of the host family and any person older than 18 living under the same roof;
- Proof for the children younger than five that their daycare has been arranged for a period that corresponds with the maximum duration of the au pair's stay.
When changing families, also attach:
- A photocopy of the residence document of the person in question;
- A photocopy of the authorisation to work of the person in question;
- All the documents mentioned in points 1 to 12 above.
Procedure
Validity term
The authorisation to work for the au pair will be valid for 1 year at most.
