Authorisation to work
Visiting professor

1) For a first application

  • The application form for an authorisation to work for a foreign worker (employer in Belgium or abroad), completed, signed and dated by the employer or their agent (natural person legally residing in Belgium), or generated by the electronic platform
  • A photocopy of every page of the worker's current passport
  • A photocopy of the identity card of the employer or their agent
  • A photocopy of the document covering the worker's stay, if they are living in Belgium
  • If the application concerns a secondment: a declaration signed by the employer specifying the duration of the secondment and the employment and payment conditions during the secondment
  • If the application concerns a secondment: a copy of the document issued by the foreign social security institution stating that that country's social security legislation continues to apply during residence in Belgium where an international agreement on social security exists or, in the absence of such an international agreement, a document from the Federal Public Service Social Security stating that the worker cannot be subject to Belgian social security
  • If the application concerns a secondment and if the employer abroad is a legal entity: the name of the employer, its legal form and a copy of its articles of association as registered in accordance with the law of the state in which it is established. If they are not drawn up in French, Dutch or English, the articles of association have to be translated by a sworn translator or interpreter as referred to in Book V of Part 2 of the Judicial Code.
  • Proof of the invitation and, as the case may be, the selection by the university, the higher education establishment or the recognised scientific institution
  • Proof that the professor holds a doctorate or an equivalent academic qualification, or that they possess exceptional scientific qualities, the existence of which is attested by the host institution. If necessary, a version translated by a sworn translator will be attached.
  • Proof that they will receive remuneration equal to or higher than the scale for teaching staff at French-speaking universities or higher education establishments or for independent academic staff at Flemish universities or for the same grades at Flemish higher education establishments OR
    In case the visiting professor continues to be remunerated by the institution they come from: proof that the minimum remuneration amount will reach the guaranteed average minimum monthly income set by article 3 of the collective labour agreement no. 43 of 2 May 1988. In this case, a photocopy of the employment contract binding the worker to their employer abroad must be attached, with the version translated by a sworn translator, where applicable.

2) For a renewal

  • The application form for an authorisation to work for a foreign worker (employer in Belgium or abroad), completed, signed and dated by the employer or their agent (natural person legally residing in Belgium), or generated by the electronic platform 
  • A photocopy of the identity card of the employer or their agent
  • A photocopy of the document covering the worker's stay in Belgium
  • A photocopy of all the pay slips for the entire period of the authorisation to work that is expiring
  • A photocopy of the individual account after one full calendar year of work by the worker
  • If granted by another region: a photocopy of the worker’s previous authorisation to work
  • If the authorisation to work concerns a cross-border worker: the relevant residence document issued by the municipality where the worker is employed.
  • If the application concerns a secondment: a declaration signed by the employer specifying the duration of the secondment and the employment and payment conditions during the secondment
  • If the application concerns a secondment: a copy of the document issued by the foreign social security institution stating that that country's social security legislation continues to apply during residence in Belgium where an international agreement on social security exists or, in the absence of such an international agreement, a document from the Federal Public Service Social Security stating that the worker cannot be subject to Belgian social security
  • If the application concerns a secondment: proof of entry in the Limosa register for the previous period
  • Proof of the invitation and, as the case may be, the selection by the university, the higher education establishment or the recognised scientific institution
  • Proof that they will receive remuneration equal to or higher than the scale for teaching staff at French-speaking universities or higher education establishments or for independent academic staff at Flemish universities or for the same grades at Flemish higher education establishments.
    OR In case the visiting professor continues to be remunerated by the institution they come from, proof that the minimum remuneration amount will reach the guaranteed average minimum monthly income set by article 3 of the collective labour agreement no. 43 of 2 May 1988.
