Application for a blue card
(Art. 22 to 24 DGBCR, 16 May 2024)
If you meet the conditions to apply for a Blue Card:
- Prepare the necessary annexes.
- Fill in an application for a single permit via the digital counter "Working in Belgium".
If you have any questions about this application, please consult the FAQ.
This applies if the employee's gross monthly salary exceeds a certain amount.
What is the procedure?
The procedure requires a maximum of 90 days between the time the application is declared complete by Brussels Economy and Employment, and the issuance of the single permit/the notification of refusal.
Validity period of the Blue Card
The authorisation to work is granted for the duration of the employment contract, with a maximum duration of three years. Renewals are possible after that period.
For an employment period of more than a year:
The pay must stay above the thresholds set. The indexation of the amounts on 1 January of each year applies immediately.
Change of employer
You may change employers during the validity period of your Blue Card.
In that case, you have to send several documents to Brussels Economy and Employment:
- the change of employer notification form (in French (.pdf) or in Dutch (.pdf)), duly completed, signed and dated by the employer or their authorised representative (natural person legally residing in Belgium), or generated by the electronic platform;
- for an employee in the private sector: a copy of the new employment contract (in accordance with the provisions of the law dated 3 July 1978 on employment contracts), dated and signed by both parties
for a civil servant: the designation or appointment act.
During the first year using the Blue Card, a change of employer can only be made 30 days after notification, provided that in the meantime, Brussels Economy and Employment has not notified a decision to refuse the change of employer.
